How to measure and evaluate blood pressure accurately
Here is a guide on the correct way to get your blood pressure taken, no matter if checked at the doctor’s office or checking it at home.

Don’t eat or drink anything 30 minutes before you take your blood pressure.
Fasting should be done up to 30 minutes before taking your blood pressure to ensure that your numbers are accurate. This is because what we eat can affect the reading we get from our blood pressure management. This could lead to a false result if your blood pressure is abnormally high due to recent intake of salt but falls to normal levels afterwards.
Remember to fast 30 minutes before taking a blood pressure reading!

Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported for at least 5 minutes before your reading.
Sitting in a comfortable position will enable your body to calm down and get into a relaxed state. This is your ideal posture for taking a reading since your body is stationary and comfortable.

Put both feet flat on the ground and keep your legs uncrossed.
Placing your feet on the ground will make you not as likely to fidget and move about while taking a reading, this is important as even small movements like shaking your legs or crossing your legs can lead to increased and false readings of your blood pressure.

Rest your arm with the cuff on a table at chest height.
To start, place your arm on an even surface like a table and make sure it is chest height to ensure blood is flowing through the veins in your arms. Blood pressure monitors will give inaccurate readings if your arms are not in the correct position.

Make sure the blood pressure cuff is snug but not too tight. The cuff should be against your bare skin, not over clothing.
Tighten the blood pressure monitor cuff on your arm just above your elbow, this is the ideal position and it should be done on your body directly instead of over any clothing such as long sleeves. The cuff should not be tightened too tightly as it will expand and you might feel uncomfortable.

Do not talk while your blood pressure is being measured.
Talking while your blood pressure is being measured can lead to false numbers, try not to speak and minimise your movement while the blood pressure is being measured. This should take a maximum of 2-3 minutes.
